Adirondacks - New York “High Peaks”

     July 1519, 2015, Wednesday – Sunday.

This trip will leave Columbus early Wednesday morning at 5:30 am and we should arrive in Keene NY about 12 hours later.  We will stay that night at the Keene Valley Hostel.  The next day, Thursday, we will hike the Big Slide via the Brothers.  We will then camp at the Heart Lake campground Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights and use that as “base camp.”  On Friday we will hike to the top of Algonquin Peak and if feeling good will climb two other peaks on the way.  On Saturday we will hike to what is said to be one of the most beautiful lakes, Avalanche Lake, with some spectacular views.  Each of these three hiking days is 8 – 10 miles.   We will return to Columbus on Sunday.

    Registration ends May 30th!

This trip needs 6 people but no more than 6 due to DEC camping and tent restrictions in this area.

If you are interested, register on-line.  If you should have questions, feel free to e-mail me at perryjanep AT gmail.com.

     Thanks very much.

Class 3+ paddling on PA favorite.  If  you  graduated  from  KII  School  and  want  to test  all  of  those  new  boating  skills  out,  or  you  just want  to  paddle  a  beautiful  western  Pennsylvania river, this two-day trip may be for you. The Lower Youghiogheny  River  in  Southwestern  Pennsylvania is  a  beautiful  tributary  of  the  Monongahela  and  at 2ft on the gage is mostly class III with a couple of class III+ rapids thrown in for fun. We normally stop below Swimmers rapid to eat lunch, relax or play on the flat spinning wave.
We’ll most likely stay at the Ohiopyle campground, though this could change. (We’ll provide directions closer to the trip date). Plan on bringing lunch for both  days  on  the  river.   Breakfast  and  dinners  will be eat in or eat out depending on your preference/
budget.  The  weather  in  June  is  mostly  warm  but storms can be unpredictable and bring much cooler temperatures, so be prepared to layer for a variety of conditions.  Mark Noltimier  noltimier(AT)guildassociates.com or mark.

DATE CHANGE! We are earlier this year to foil a govt shutdown!  The Plan is to paddle 6 days on the Current River in SE MO. We are going for a week of sublime canoe camping on the Current River in Missouri!  The Current River is a spring fed gem in the Ozark hills of SE Missouri.  While heavily canoed in the summer, the Current is quiet by October.  This is a beautiful trip!  It is also a quite leisurely trip - this is my last extended canoe trip, and we are going to enjoy it!   We will be camping on extensive gravel bars after paddling glass-clear water!  While paddling we can visit some historic sites and springs.  Now for the disclaimers - while the normal weather for this try is dry and warm, we have had episodes of cold and / or rainy weather.  The Current River is rated Class 1+ for difficulty, some some boating experience is needed.  On the section I prefer, we have one chute that approaches Class 2 in difficulty.  The Current River is clear, and has a fairly steady current.  The river alternates deep pools and channels with swift, shallow runs - and given that the bottom of the river is gravel, you can expect to scrape your boat more than a few times.  We will be doing primitive camping on gravel bars with no toilet facilities!  We pass by National Forest Service campgrounds a couple of times during the week, so water jugs can be filled with treated water and bathrooms visited ... but the normal bathroom experience will be dig a hole!    Basic Equipment Needs - a decent tent, sleeping bag rated for 20 degrees, clothing for hot and cold days, and a really good attitude!
