    Rescue Class-Tuesday, August 5th,
     6:00  – 8:00 pm

These are fun; fast paced introductory classes, which follow the American Canoe Association’s “QuickStart” format. The course covers safety topics, types of gear/boats, clothing and strokes. The class is taught by ACA certified instructors and qualified assistants.

The land-based portion of the class will be held indoors at the COP office on Bethel Road on the Monday prior to the Saturday outdoor/on-the-water class. Participants must attend the indoor session; material covered in this class will not be covered in the outdoor class.

Sunday’s Trip Class (this is a separate fee class, not part of the “QuickStart” class) will allow those who took the class on Saturday to learn about planning for a short basic trip and to venture out on their first excursion with the benefit of qualified instructors traveling with them. The QuickStart class is a pre-requisite for the Trip & Rescue Classes.

The Rescue Class will involve dry land and on-the-water skills.

Mandatory Classroom Session is held at the COP Office, 1525 Bethel Road.  map

    Return to the Porkies!

    September 16-21

We will be heading back to the Porcupine Mountains State Park in Michigan's Upper Peninsula.  Starting at Lake of the Clouds, this 35 mile loop is the best the Porkies has to offer, with views along the escarpment, water falls along the Big & Little Carp Rivers, and a short stretch along Lake Superior.
This will be a strenuous hike, all down hill the first two days, and mostly up hill the last two.  Several creek crossings day 1 and day 3.  But, each nights camp will be near water, and the scenery is fantastic.
We will leave Columbus very early Wednesday morning.  It is 750 miles drive!  I'd like to get a few miles down the trail before pitching our tents that night.  Then we'll be hiking an average of 10 miles each day, with another short hike out on Sunday before the long drive home. (Or maybe a night car camping before we head back home?)
This trip is limited to 6, but if nobody registers, I may just go solo.  I have been waiting to hike this loop since I was 11 years old and this may be my last chance.

We are going for a week of sublime canoe camping on the Current River (or mayb e another river...) in Missouri!  The Current River is a spring fed gem in the Ozark hills of SE Missouri.  While heavily canoed in the summer, the Current is quiet by October.  This is a beautiful trip!  It is also a quite leisurely trip - this is my last extended canoe trip, and we are going to enjoy it!   We will be camping on extensive gravel bars after paddling glass-clear water!  While paddling we can visit some historic sites and springs.  Now for the disclaimers - while the normal weather for this try is dry and warm, we have had episodes of cold and / or rainy weather.  The Current River is rated Class 1+ for difficulty, some some boating experience is needed.  On the section I prefer, we have one chute that approaches Class 2 in difficulty.  The Current River is clear, and has a fairly steady current.  The river alternates deep pools and channels with swift, shallow runs - and given that the bottom of the river is gravel, you can expect to scrape your boat more than a few times.  We will be doing primitive camping on gravel bars with no toilet facilities!  We pass by National Forest Service campgrounds a couple of times during the week, so water jugs can be filled with treated water and bathrooms visited ... but the normal bathroom experience will be dig a hole and squat!   I have been doing a Current River in October since 1997, so that is my vote on how this is at that time of year.  Basic Equipment Needs - a decent tent, sleeping bag rated for 20 degrees, clothing for hot and cold days, and a really good attitude!
