    Whitewater

This is not a class (no fee), but it is geared to paddlers completing COP Intro to Whitewater Clinic or equivalent (Canoe or Kayak).

This is a great river for new or fresher to whitewater. Most of the rapids are straight forward and we will have experienced paddlers to help guide and assist with safety.
Frequently at this time of year the water levels are too high on the Narrows for KII graduates comfort level and we will choose our destination based on their abilities and desires. Alternatives to the Cheat Narrows will include the Dry Fork of the Cheat and the Casselman River. Although there is more " push" to these rivers than the Rocky Fork or Paint Creek where the clinic is taught, the trip will be an appropriate step up for graduates. This is your first chance to start evaluating your skills as a paddler. If you had a relatively positive experience during the clinic, then this is likely your next step. (If in doubt ask your instructor or call me).

    Cheat River Narrows http://www.americanwhitewater.org/content/River/detail/id/2346/

This is also Cheatfest weekend. So there will be food and Bluegrass entertainment on Saturday night. We will be driving down Friday, camping – plan your own meals.

Paddle Saturday and Sunday – weather and water dependent.

    Introduction to River Kayaking
    Saturday, May 14th
Want to explore kayaking on moving water? Curious about back ferries and eddy turns but too shy to ask?

Introduction to River Kayaking (IRK) is for you! This class introduces the skills you need to take charge of your boat and travel safely on Class I & II rivers.  You’ll learn how to spot and avoid river hazards and how to use different river features to make paddling easy, relaxing, and fun.

Plan on a full day: IRK usually lasts for 8-10 hours.

It’s the weather that decides where we’ll paddle, though it will be somewhere local.

IRK is a great class for anyone who wants to do day trips on easier moving water, but it is not a beginner’s class. Before taking this class, students must have completed COP Kayak I, COP QuickStart Kayak, COP Beginning Kayak other equivalent class or have the appropriate experience.

Before signing up for this class, students are expected to be comfortable performing a wet exit and should have some very basic kayaking experience.

    The cost:
    $65 for COP Members
    $75 for Non-members

Kayaks are provided, along with other essential gear.

Please contact Tony Skrabak tony.skrabak@gmail.com about experience level requirements and any other questions you may have.

We are unable to refund for cancellations that cannot be replaced.

    Whitewater

The Lower Youghiogheny River in Pennsylvania's Laurel Highlands is one of the most popular whitewater runs in the U.S. It provides intermediate paddlers with a variety of challenging Class III+ rapids, especially at higher levels. Since this is May, levels might even get too high, requiring us to change rivers.

This is a joint trip with COP and Coastals from Virginia. Some participants are staying at Kentuck Campground in Ohiopyle State Park but there a plenty of alternatives.

If you are interested in joining us on the Lower Yough, contact trip coordinator, John Black, jd.black2@ymail.com

    Festival Time!
    The campground opens friday afternoon.

If there is interest, or water I will be driving out Friday early, otherwise Friday evening. It has historically cost $10 to enter the festival, and $10 to camp. However in practice if you camp there, you will pay $20. Last year we stayed at Quemahoning lake campground. Which we pick will be based on interest.

Based on water, interest, and skill levels this can be a down river, a play boating (my personal favorite), or even a creeking trip (If creeks in area become watered).

Eating arrangements will be at each persons discretion. I usually bring something for one day, and eat out or the festival food the other night. There are not a lot of restaurants in the immediate area.

The park, which serves as festival and campground (but only for this weekend!) also hosts a play wave that is lit up to all hours of the night. If you’ve ever wanted to play in the water at night, this is one of the safest and funnest ways to be introduced to night boating.

The Stoney creek river is class III-IV mini canyon. Class IV only if the water is high. The run is pretty continuous and the rocks are hard, but very pretty :) In general, 4ft on the gauge (5ft on AW) is an ideal level and the run is somewhat easier than the Lower Yough, with more play, especially in the first couple of miles.

    Introduction to River Kayaking
    Saturday, June 4th

    Swift Water Rescue Clinic 2016

    Saturday, June 4 - Sunday, June 5

    Cheat Narrows | Albright, WV

    Instructor: Charlie Walbridge
    http://charliewalbridge.com/swiftwater-rescue/

This clinic is open to members and non-members. You may register early to secure your spot but all payments must be made by Sunday May15th.

Price includes instruction and two-nights camping at Teters Campground.

This ACA "Level 4" rescue class with Charlie Walbridge is intended for intermediate paddlers, comfortable making ferries and eddy turns in Class II-III water. You must be confident in your boat and have experience in Class II moving water to gain the most from this clinic.

Good swimming ability is also needed. We cover whitewater swimming and wading, throw bag use, rescue life vests, boat unpinning, entrapment rescue, and scene management.

Students will need a whitewater boat, all paddling gear, including a PFD, helmet, wetsuit, and foot protection. The wetsuit is needed since we spend a lot of time in the water and you'll get cold even in the warm months. Everyone should bring a throw bag, 2 carabiners, and a 1" tubular webbing of at least 8'.  A rescue PFD is not required for this class.

Bring a comfortable chair for land sessions, sunscreen, and a water bottle.

Classes run 8am - 5pm Saturday and 9am - 4pm on Sunday. The mornings are for classroom work and are held under the shelter on the Cheatfest festival grounds, and afternoons are on the water usually on the Cheat Narrows.

    Food:
You will be on your own for meals at the campsite and a packed lunch during the day.  Lunches will occur during the break between dry-land sessions and on the water sessions.  Be prepared to have your lunch mobile in case we need to travel for water.

    Location/Lodging:

Albright, WV  -  Cheat Narrows or other available river depending on water levels.

Camping will be included in the cost and located at Teters Campground which is adjacent to the Cheatfest festival grounds.

    Beginning Sailing Class at Hoover
    Saturday June 4

    Instructor/Leader: Graham Lowe

Students are not required to have any sailing experience. If you have sailed before, this is an opportunity to sail the sports car of the sailboat world - the catamaran. With a 27 foot mast, and a weight of 330 lbs., the Hobie 16 catamaran has power to spare.

The catamaran is very responsive in even the lightest of wind and when its blows - she goes!  The catamaran does offer the novice an excellent platform to learn from. The catamaran reacts quickly to sail and tiller adjustments, so the cause and effect is easily understood. The catamaran has an open deck and good visibility. The catamaran is a beach boat, meaning it can be launched from the beach rather than using a boat dock. This makes getting on and off the lake - much easier for the beginner. Hoover Reservoir has areas to sail slow and fast...

We want you to leave the class with an understanding:

    Sailing basics are easily learned

Sailing is more about aerodynamics than hydrodynamics

Sailing doesn’t change from small sailboat to large sailboat

Sailing gear changes from boat to boat,, but sailing gear all do the same things

Summary: Sailing - even as a beginner - is a rewarding way to spend a day on the lake - as a captain or crew.

    Gear

Clothing that you don't mind if it gets wet.

You will be sitting on a sailboat, and if its windy, water will spray up on the sailboat, so you may be sitting in water as it sheets over the deck.

Be prepared to get wet and avoid wearing cotton clothing.  So dress accordingly. Long shorts seem to the be choice for guys and gals. June should be warm, but just like any time of year the weather is unpredictable so bring a jacket if it looks to be a cool day.

Boats, saying gear and safety equipment including lifejackets will be provided. If you prefer your own lifejacket - bring it.

    Footwear

You will be wading out to the sailboat in knee deep water. So you will need snug fitting footwear that protects the foot and allows for water drainage. Aquasox or similar designs are recommended but not required. An old pair of sneakers will work just fine.  Flip Flops, Crocs or other loose footwear should be avoided as they come off so easily.

    Sun Protection

The lake reflects a lot of light and UV. Hats. sunglasses that can be properly secured are encouraged. If you are sensitive to strong sun, bring a Sunscreen lotion.

    Food & Drink

Breakfast or lunch will not be provided by the Sailing Club.

We will provide a mid-morning snack of sandwiches, healthful snacks and bottled water.

If you prefer, bring your own sandwiches, snacks and drinks.

We have indoor seating and instruction area.

We will try to conclude the Sailing lessons by 1 PM. Recognize that we will slow or accelerate the class depending on the students prior sailing knowledge, class questions and interest about specific aspects, and of course wind conditions.
