We now have the TOSRV Final Report for 2013.  Huge thanks go out to Rick Hochstetter and the veteran TOSRV volunteers!  They were able to "reboot" TOSRV for 2013, and they turned the ride around from a less than stellar year in 2012.  I got to work with TOSRV volunteers in 2013, and was very impressed with the entire crew.  I did my part by being the Luggage Truck driver for the Half TOSRV.   I also helped where I could with registration questions, since we had some situations from 2012 that resulted in people being promised a "free" TOSRV in 2013.  All of these situations were resolved to everyone's satisfaction, and we were able to avoid the situations in 2013 that led to the "free TOSRV" registrations promised back in 2012.    The TOSRV crew of 2013 was able to control the expenses of the ride, and thus COP was able to add about $50,000 dollars to our operating revenues.  This was a huge plus to a successful TOSRV!   (by Keith Finn, President Columbus Outdoor Pursuits).

It's time to put your name in the hat for October's Board Election!
The COP Board is composed of 10 elected members and not more than 10 ex-officio members. Elected members serve two-year terms, five elected each year.  The ex-officio members are nominated by the president and approved by the Board, and represent the main activities and projects: TOSRV Director, XOBA Director, Risk Manager, bicycle Project Development Fund and the Bicycling, Backpacking, Boating, Camping, Climbing, Hiking, Running and Winter Activities.
Only elected members may be officers.
Whether elected or appointed by their activity, board members have the same responsibilities. They carry the responsibility for the legal, fiscal and ethical control of the Corporation.    Read more...

Many of our current Activity Leaders have been in their positions a long time now and would like to move on.  This includes Climbing and Backpacking.  Plus we have the new activities of camping and running that are in need of leadership.  With that in mind, I thought it might be a good idea to publish the current Activity Leader Job Description.

    By Keith Finn, President

At our April 4th Board Meeting, we discussed our slate of Activities.  Here is what came of those discussions…

New Activity – Camping (or Just Plain Camping as a social and educational activity)
When I was kid, some of my favorite memories were of camping trips where that WAS the activity. I think/hope this could be a great activity for families, and anyone who likes telling stories around a campfire while roasting marshmallows. We will add Camping as a full activity, and will need to recruit a volunteer to act as the Activity Leader.  COP envisions the Camping activity as a way to spend time outdoors, in any variety of activities.  Even when you are “just” camping, there are plenty of things to learn…fire building, outdoor cookery, choosing a good tent, sleeping comfortably, star gazing, story telling, creeking, wildlife identification (is that a skunk!) – well, the list just goes on.  I hope to try to setup at first a series of campouts each month in some of Ohio’s parks and natural areas.  If you are interested in being the Camping activity leader, or leading a Camping trip, please contact me at president@outdoor-pursuits.org

    New Activity - non-competitive running
Our Treasurer, Rich Lesnansky, is an avid runner. He suggested a running activity as an addition to COP. Insurance does not allow COP to run "timed" events, so we cannot run competitive running events. Social events are just fine, and COP members could enter popular local events as a group.  This can be aimed at both road and trail runners (talking to you, Sharon Seslar!).  Sadly, this is one activity I will not be able to participate in.  I have accumulated so much damage to my tendons in my feet and legs that I am forbidden from running evermore.  But, many members have expressed an interest in the activity.  .  If you are interested in being the Running activity leader, or leading a Running trip, please contact me at president@outdoor-pursuits.org

New addition to the Boating Family - Fishing from canoes and kayaks
Last summer, I went on my first fishing trip! What a hoot! I went with a group who practice catch and release, and the excitement of having a 4 pound bass on the line while it pulled me and my boat ALL OVER the lake was not to be forgotten. This is also a boating activity that is simple to arrange, and can be done as a local trip.  My local COP fishing guides have several urban hot spots in Columbus for bass fishing!  We decided to add the Fishing activity to Boating to spare the prospective leader from having to attend Board Meetings!  If you are interested in being the new Leader for COP Small Boat Fishing, please let me know.  If you are interested in leading a Small Boat Fishing trip, contact me at president@outdoor-pursuits.org and Walt Taylor at boating@outdoor-pursuits.org

    Say goodbye to Caving
Our Caving Activity chair has been vacant for a couple of years, and no volunteers have stepped up despite pleas from me.  And, seeing there was no actual demand for caving trips, we decided to retire the Activity.  I had plenty of good times on Caving trips, and will miss it.
