Celebrate with COP and Find Your Next Adventure at the Columbus Adventure Expo
Have you ever wondered what COP activities might interest you other than the one you participate in? Were you interested, for instance, in rock climbing, but didn’t know what equipment you need? Do you want to know the best kayak for fishing in Central Ohio? Do you want to identify the best schedule of COP bicycle rides in which to participate for this year’s Pelotonia? Have you considered being a leader or volunteering for a particular activity and want to know what’s available? Or do you simply need a kick start to your outdoor adventuring for the summer?

The first ever Columbus Adventure Expo, scheduled for Sat., May 10 1 to 8 pm at the Columbus Commons, is a great place to have your questions answered and more. Expert COP members, including representatives from our three newest activities – non-competitive running, camping and kayak fishing - will be available to engage you in friendly discussion, information sharing, and demonstrations. Moreover, many COP activity leaders will be offering specific “sample” eventsduring the day, so you can try out with a new activity or reacquaint yourself with one. Check the online calendar at for up-to-date event schedules.

The Expo is free and open to everyone. So it’s a great opportunity to introduce friends and family members to all that COP has to offer. In additional to COP expertise, vendors from local and nationwide stores and representativeorganizations will provide additional assistance, information on the latest merchandise, places to go, and things to consider.

The Expo is conveniently located regardless of where you live. A diverse set of local food trucks will be on premise to provide reasonably priced meals, snacks and refreshments. And live music will create a festival-like atmosphere. Reasonably priced parking is available under the Commons or nearby streets. And there will be a bike corral for those interested in pedaling to the Expo.

So shake off any lingering winter blues. Let the Expo broaden your horizons and help you (and your family and friends) take on a new adventure this year!

Please take a moment to welcome Katie Cordova as our new Camping Activity Chair.

Here is a little about Katie...

I grew up in the woods, packed inside a tent with my father and brother and sisters. My dad taught me the beauty of nature. It's silence around it and it's life within it. He taught me the peace of a simple life and to love the challenge of it all. As a mother one of my greatest joys is to pass that love onto my children to find that peace and adventure in their own lives.

“I learned this, at least, by my experiment: that if one advances confidently in the direction of his dreams, and endeavors to live the life which he has imagined, he will meet with a success unexpected in common hours.”  -Thoreau

We will all be able to officially meet Katie at the next board meeting.

    Welcome Katie and Congratulations!

New Budget Ride Fees for 2014
    $5 Members & $10 Non-Members

Columbus Outdoor Pursuits has decided to raise the Budget Ride Fees to $5 for Members and $10 for Non-Members. This was determined necessary after analyzing the cost associated with a Budget Ride. The list of cost are Insurance, allocated cost of Newsletter, marking paint, mileage for volunteers, facility cost or donation, and printing maps results in a break-even of 75 rides using the old fees. Due to competition and bad weather some of the budget rides do not attract enough riders. We don’t want to eliminate any Budget Rides, so a fee increase was decided.

In an effort to streamline our processes we also ask all riders to register on-line through our web site when possible. We will leave the “Budget Ride” Registration open until midnight the Thursday before the ride. All riders registered online will receive an email Friday morning with a GPS file link to ridewithgps for that Budget Ride. This helps with handling of money on the day of the ride and recording of the riders for our records. On-line registered riders will still need to sign a liability sheet at the ride for Insurance purposes. The online liability check is not sufficient to date.

Thank you for understanding! We want to offer these Budget Rides for many years, so bicyclist can safely enjoying roads they may not be comfortable riding without our help of maps and road markings.

    Kudos to CFC!
    Dear Fall Challenge Team,
I did the one-day option of the 2013 Fall Challenge and had an absolutely great time. The route was great, the food was great and the volunteers were great. Kudos especially to whoever planned the route. It was brilliant - a perfect blend of challenging hills, good pavement, and light traffic. I had no idea all those great roads were down there.
I've done many organized tours over the years, including many COP tours. But this has to go down as one of the all-time best. Thank you for all the hard work making it happen.

Help Wanted – Lots of Help Wanted!
    by Keith Finn, President

Position NOT listed in order of importance!

Activity Chair for Rock Climbing: After a long stretch as the Rock Climbing chair, Karen Reinhart is stepping down.  I will miss working with Karen, and the program will miss her leadership and dedication.  She will be doubly missed since we do not yet have a volunteer willing to take her place.

Activity Chair for Hiking: Pat Smith has retired from the Hiking Activity Chair effective September 9th. We will be looking for volunteers to re-invigorate the Hiking program.

Bicycle Development Fund Chair: Chad Stucke is stepping down. I really have a hard time remembering how many years Chad has served on the board.  He did a multi year stint as the COP Treasurer, and then took the task of the Chair of the Bicycle Development Fund.  I imagine Chad will be spending more time with his family...the last few board meetings included Chad's 2 children!  I will miss having Chad on the board! (and his kids...). The chair of the BDF has a lot of influence on where COP will donate funds generated by the Great Ohio Bicycle Adventure.

Nominees for Elected Board: during the time I was supposed to be beating the bushes looking for board nominees, I was volunteering on XOBA, and then I ended up in the hospital for 2 weeks (injury NOT related to XOBA!)! So, we are really looking for people who would be interested in working on a non-profit board as an elected board member.

NEW! Activity chairs for new events!

Activity Leader needed for: Non competitive Running. Due to our insurance restrictions, COP cannot run a timed, competitive event. But an interest has been expressed by some members for group runs and “Fun” runs.

Activity Leader needed for: Camping – many COP events involve camping, but this would Camping as a Social event. You know, just camping for a weekend in a nice spot, cooking out and swapping stories over the campfire.

Activity Leader needed for: Fishing from Canoes and Kayak.  Boating with a different slant. A fishing trip done from your canoe or kayak is a very different kettle of, um, “fish”. I have been on a couple of different trips where we were fishing, and had a great time. And this can be done locally!

But, we are stymied by a lack of volunteers to be the New Activity Leaders.

Whether elected or appointed by their activity, board members have the same responsibilities. They carry the responsibility for the legal, fiscal and ethical control of the Corporation.

Please, please if you have any interest in these positions, please contact me at
