2013 Kayak/Canoe School (Intro to Whitewater)
April 19-21, 2013
Learn to kayak or canoe with Columbus Outdoor Pursuits! The 2013 Kayak II/Canoe School is designed for those students interested in learning to paddle in moving water or whitewater. Students are required to have previous experience (i.e., Kayak I school, pool session practice, previous river canoeing, or similar experience) and knowledge of and comfort executing the basic paddle strokes; boat control will be expected. The ability to Eskimo roll a kayak is not required for this class but kayak students must have experience performing wet exits. We will spend the weekend at Pike Lake State Park (starting Friday evening after work) and hold the paddling portion of the school on the Rocky Fork & Paint Creek in southwest Ohio. This school will prepare students to negotiate most of Ohio’s rivers and streams and is also the first step toward whitewater kayaking. Students are encouraged to supply their own kayaks/canoes, if practical. (Please note that sea kayaks and longer, less maneuverable kayaks are not appropriate for this school.) All kayaks/canoes must be in good condition and have appropriate flotation. Students MUST have type III/V life jacket, paddle, and a whitewater helmet; kayak students must have a spray skirt (this equipment can be rented from COP).
The school has a limited number of kayaks/canoes available on a first-come basis, determined by acceptance of PAID school application.
Fees cover instruction, lodging at a State Park cabin, and meals (Friday night snack, Saturday & Sunday breakfast and lunch, and Saturday dinner).
Application and payment must be received by April 5,2013 . After this date, refunds will only be given if replacement students are available. Send application and payment (made out to Columbus Outdoor Pursuits) to: Joyce DeLeo, 2571 Mt. Holyoke Rd, Columbus, OH 43221
