Flowing through some of Ohio’s wildest and most
scenic areas, Little Beaver Creek in Columbiana
County was the first in Ohio to be designated a Wild
River. We’ve had a great time paddling the Little
Beaver!  If the water level is up, we’ll start upstream Saturday morning and paddle about 10 miles back to the state park. Sunday we’ll paddle downstream toward the
Ohio River (about 14 miles). Maybe. Be prepared
to be flexible. The paddling is mostly flat water with the occasional riffle and perhaps a Class II if the water level is right (nothing really challenging). The scenery is
unbelievable, the camping fun, the camaraderie abundant and there will be plenty of stories around the campfire!
We’ll be camping at the state park Friday and Saturday
nights, so we won’t be carrying any camping gear on
board (just your lunch, snacks and drink . . . and dry
clothes in case of a swim!). Little Beaver Creek State
Park is a 3.5 hour drive from Columbus. The weather
is expected to be perfect, so plan on going!

    • Pike Lake State Park
The 2014 Kayak II/Canoe School is April 25-27, and is designed for those students interested in learning to paddle in moving water or whitewater. Students are required to have previous experience (i.e., Kayak I school, pool session practice, previous river canoeing, or similar experience) and knowledge of and comfort executing the basic paddle strokes; boat control will be expected. The ability to Eskimo roll a kayak is not required for this class but kayak students must have experience performing wet exits. We will spend the weekend at Pike Lake State Park in cabins (starting Friday evening after work, the 25th) and hold the paddling portion of the school on the Rocky Fork & Paint Creek in southwest Ohio. This school will prepare students to negotiate most of Ohio's rivers and streams and is also the first step toward whitewater kayaking. Students are encouraged to supply their own kayaks/ canoes, if practical. (Please note that sea kayaks and longer, less maneuverable kayaks are not appropriate for this school.) All kayaks/canoes must be in good condition and have appropriate flotation. Students MUST have type III life jacket, paddle, and a white-water helmet and spray skirt (this equipment can be rented from COP). COP has a limited number of rental boats and equipment available, and can be reserved on a first-come first serve basis, determined by acceptance of paid school application.

Fees cover instruction, lodging which are heated cabins with bathrooms, but may require some stu-dents to sleep on the floor, and meals (Friday night snack, Saturday & Sunday breakfast and lunch, and Saturday dinner). Fees are $150 for COP members with their own equipment and $170 for those renting. Participants must be current COP members. • Location
Once again we will be heading down to West
Virginia for the Annual Cheat River Festival, but
this year we will be looking to paddle Class 3 +
whitewater. This could include the Cheat Canyon,
Little Sandy / Upper Big Sandy, the Dry Fork or
even the Lower Yough. Water levels in the area will
determine our final destination.  We will meet and camp at Cheat Canyon Campground Campground Website Approx. 1/2 mile down Rt. 26 from the festival. No pets. For more information about the festival log on at: http://www.cheat.org/our-work/cheat-river-festival/  You can camp in your vehicle or in a tent/bivy.  Our goal on the morning of Saturday May 3 will be to get moving by 8:30 a.m., my recommendation would be to pack your breakfast. The campground offers a limited breakfast and coffee. Either way, we are heading to the river at 8:30 a.m.. This is early May and you should be prepared for chilly temps on and off the water. If you have questions about suitable
river gear contact me. As always, NO COTTON.

    The Adirondacks, near Lake Placid

    May 14-18

    Registration opens April 6th.

    Details of Adirondacks trip.

May 14:  Drive to Keene, NY, near Lake Placid.  This is a long 10 – 12 hour trip.  Stay overnight at Keene Valley Hostel.  $25/per person.

May 15:  Hike Big Slide Mt. via the Brothers, approx. 8 miles round trip.

Drive about 25 minutes to camp at Heart Lake campground.  Water and showers available. Total cost of reserving camp site for two nights is $22 per person if at least 6 people go.

May 16:  Backpack from Heart Lake campsite to Algonquin Mt., second highest in Adirondacks, then back to Marcy Dam area to camp overnight.  Approx. 8 miles round trip.

May 17:  Hike from Marcy Dam area to Avalanche Pass, return from Avalanche Pass to Heart Lake campground to camp overnight.

Depending on how far we go into Avalanche Pass, this is an 8 – 10 mile day.

    May 18:  Return to Columbus

This is a trip with substantial costs:  NY thruway, I-90, has tolls, about $30 each way.  Hostel is $25 per person.  Two nights at Heart Lake campground (5/15 and 5/17) is $22 per person total. Then there is gas for trip there and back, and meals.

Split 6 ways, I need a non-refundable deposit of $57 ($25 each for hostel; $22 each for campground; $10 each for tolls) and at least 6 registrants by end of the day Monday, April 7th to do this trip.  The non-refundable registration does not include gas and any meals.  Again, I think costs would be too high with less than 6 folks.

Participants will need to bring bear canisters, required in Adirondacks.

Folks can call or email with any questions or suggestions.  Thanks,

    Jane Perry

    614-261-1711

    perdav@columbus.rr.com

I believe this is a 6 person max trip, there are limitations on numbers at campgrounds and wilderness lean-to’s.  Six is ideal number to keep costs manageable.

    Essentials of River Kayaking Class
    Saturday, May 17th
Plan on a full day, 8-10 hours

Want to explore river paddling, but not quite ready for whitewater? Curious about back ferries and eddy turns but too shy to ask? Essentials of River Kayaking (ERK) is for you! This class introduces the skills you need to take charge of your boat and travel safely on Class I rivers.  You’ll learn how to spot and avoid river hazards and how to use different river features to make paddling easy, relaxing, and fun.

Plan on a full day: ERK usually lasts for 8-10 hours.

It’s the weather that decides where we’ll paddle, though it will be somewhere local.

ERK is a great class for anyone who wants to do day trips on easier moving water, but it is not a beginner’s class. Before taking this class, students must complete COP Kayak I, COP QuickStart Kayak, or an equivalent class.

Before signing up for this class, students should be comfortable performing a wet exit and should have some very basic kayaking experience.

The cost for the class is $65 for COP Members, $75 for Non-members. Kayaks are provided, along with other essential gear.

Students who complete ERK are welcome to join us for a local river trip on the following Sunday.

Cancellations which cannot be replaced and/or no-shows will not be refunded.
See registration form in the April issue of Columbus Outdoors.

    • Location
Join Columbus Outdoor Pursuits boaters for very nice day on the Kokosing River.  Mike and Kitty will paddle this designated scenic river. We’ve put in an order for good spring weather and hope to see some early flora
and fauna. Some moving water experience would be
beneficial for this trip. This would be a perfect river for
recent COP Boating School graduates to practice their
skills. Cost could include any equipment rental charges
    and sharing in the transportation.

There will be no hikes on the fifth Sunday of each month (June, August and November) unless the group desires special hikes at other locations on those days.
